individual therapy
We understand that psychological treatment can be an anxiety-provoking experience. Whether it’s your first experience with therapy, or a continuation, we provide a comfortable environment to set your worries aside.
“What is therapy like?”
For Adults
Treatment always begins with an initial evaluation to assess need and treatment goals and establish a therapeutic relationship. Individual therapy is typically a weekly 50-minute session; however, the frequency can vary depending on one’s clinical needs.
For Children and Adolescents
The initial evaluation involves a discussion with the parents and the child separately. This insures a complete assessment of the issues and a developmental history as well.
Typically, treatment sessions do not include the parent. On occasion, a parent will join for part of the session or for a re-cap at the end. Building on skills and providing tools for the future is always a part of the treatment plan – tools for both the child and the parent.
Parental involvement is an essential part of the child’s treatment process. Constant contact and communication with the parent or guardian keeps them in the loop on treatment and progress.
Parental involvement is equally important for adolescents, but given the importance of a trusting and strong therapeutic relationship between the adolescent and the therapist, we don’t always discuss treatment specifics with both the parent and patient.
